The Lucky Few: Fat Runners, Us Lucky Few
By admin | December 24, 2008
What people of smaller size do not seem to understand, at times, is that running is not always about the competition or the speed. For some of us, it really is about the love of the sport. For some, it is about health and weight loss. For some it is nothing more than a means to burn fat.
Us few, us very lucky few, who really enjoy the sport and not just participating in a competition for trophies or medals. Us lucky few who are proud of also being a fan (possibly even fanatical) at events. We watch the Hawaii Ironman, the Boston Marathon and New York with amazement.
We share in the joy and pain for those who are in the middle of the pack just trying to finish for something other than a financial gain. They may be pushing a disabled child in a wheelchair, a cancer survivor, a wounded warrior or racing against themselves. We live for their stories, we relate to them more than the world class runners. In fact we are angered when there is not enough coverage of “Joe the Plumber” types in these competitions.
We watch the Olympics in disgust because there is no longer any good coverage of the distance events and it never seems to cover the life stories of those who made it there. These are the stories we want to hear. We want to be inspired.
These stories about the average Joe’s and even the stars that overcome adversity and conquer their fears to achieve greatness or just finish the race, these are the stories that get us out of bed the next morning, on the road and pounding pavement. Us few, us lucky few, who really love this sport.
Keep up the fat running!
